Joining the WordPress community is one of the best things I’ve ever done. What started out as a project turned into a creative outlet which then turned into an entire community of supportive people who have traveled similar paths to my own and have offered their support and advice. Most importantly, they’ve offered their ears and let me rant and rave about what ails me and my psyche. For that, I am eternally grateful.
Before last October, I didn’t really share much of myself on my blog. I wrote fiction, some poetry, and ranted a lot about whatever was pissing me off in the news. When my shit hit the fan a community of bloggers showed up to offer me encouragement and share their stories. It was both very unexpected and extremely welcome. I was shocked to find such a supportive community conjure itself up from nowhere.
I have found that the majority of bloggers on WordPress (in my experience anyhow) have suffered some sort of psychological or physical trauma. Some have suffered both. Some have suffered more than others. Whether it’s depression, addiction, abuse, rape, or even a murder attempt, most of us have suffered and have found that sharing our stories is cathartic and therapeutic. We bond over our mutual stories of suffering. We encourage each other with wishes of hope and stories of success. We are there for each other. I have made many, many friends here and I am truly thankful for each one of you.
I wanted to take a moment to share a couple of blogs with you that are dedicated to those trials we endure, have endured, or will endure in the future. I have posted on both blogs, and both blogs should be a part of your daily reading. In my humble opinion, anyhow.
The first site I’d like to tell you about is a collaborative blog, Black Box Warnings. Founded by Le Clown, it was originally a site where he talked about his son and the medication he was ordered to give him by the court. It has morphed into a safe haven for all bloggers to talk about anything serious they are dealing with in their lives, most of which centers around mental and/or physical health. Le Clown has created a wonderful place for all of us to turn to when we need support or have a story we need to share. If you have a story regarding mental or physical health that you’d like to share that you don’t feel is right for your blog, or you’d like to share your story with a new audience, please contact Le Clown at email@example.com.
The second site I’d like to tell you about is Deliberate Donkey. Founded by Melanie, Deliberate Donkey is a site for Melanie to talk about the abuse (mental, physical, and emotional) she suffered at the hands of her ex-husband. She also talks about her road to recovery as she journeys towards becoming herself again after having suffered for so long. Melanie has recently decided to make her blog more of a collaborative effort, much like Black Box Warnings. Melanie has put out an open call to anyone who would like to share a story of abuse or overcoming abuse on her blog. If you or anyone else you know has a story they need to or would like to share, please contact Melanie at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Both blogs are exposing topics that aren’t talked about nearly enough in every day circles. They are topics discussed behind closed doors. They are topics we stray from. That we’re ashamed of. Topics we collectively fail to confront. We will never solve anything by ignoring it folks. Mental health needs to be talked about. Abuse (of any kind) needs to be talked about. Only by taking these topics head on can we conquer them.
Even if you have no story to share on either blog I encourage you to follow both blogs and offer your support to those brave enough to share their stories. The souls courageous enough to share their stories could use your support, advice, encouragement, and experience. I hope to see you there.
