I’m Not Human

I decided a long time ago to no longer watch the news or peruse news sites. I could no longer tolerate the avalanche of bad news I would digest on a daily basis. War. Murder. Rape. Inequality. Hatred. I couldn’t take it any more and had no desire for their constant reminders.

Sadly, actively avoiding the news doesn’t mean I still don’t see or hear things about current events. I’m on Twitter. My fellow bloggers sometimes use their blogs as a platform from which to opine on current news. My Facebook feed is increasingly filled more and more with news, both local and global.

Here are a few examples of news stories that can currently be found in my Facebook feed:

So much bad news. So much negativity. So much sadness. So much stupidity. I’m fed up with it. I’m tired of the constant reminders of humanity’s inhumanity. Even here, in the blogosphere, I am not immune to the stupidity of the general public. I felt compelled to publish a post not long ago where I ranted (quite profanely) about a great blogging friend of mine receiving gobs of hate mail for no other reason than having a successful blog. Disgusting.

The straw that broke the camel’s back broke the camel’s back tonight. While chatting with a blog friend, I was informed that a fellow blogger who has recently posted a great deal about body image and weight issues was left a comment calling her fat and ugly. I snapped.

What’s wrong with people? Ugh…I hate people. I formally declare myself not human. I don’t know what I am, but fuck humans.

The more I thought about it, the more I embraced my reaction. Why would I want to be a part of a race that treats its own kind so horribly? Why should I want to be a part of a race that murders its own? A race that hates so freely and strongly? A violent race that butchers and rapes its own kind? A race that demeans others simply because they’re different?

The answer to all of those questions is: I don’t.

I know not all humans are evil, but the onslaught of misdeeds by humanity is just too great for me to bear. So I’m seceding from the human race. If war, hatred, greed, racism, sexism, and persecution are the human way, then you can count me out. I want nothing to do with that.

I’m going to start a new race. A race where peace replaces war. A race where love replaces hate. A race where tolerance replaces intolerance. A race where kindness replaces violence. A race where benevolence replaces greed. A race where equality replaces inequality.

I’ve yet to select a name for my new race, but will you join me? Will you turn your back on the dark side and walk in the light? Will you help me choose a name for my new race and spread the positive word? I could certainly use your help.

  1. Well, I may join you, but I have to say, people do much much more good stuff than bad. The bad just gets a lot of attention. How else do you explain pop tarts? Baseball? Luke Skywalker? My blog? All good things.

Some wanker may additionally argue that if we track the relative goodness of the human race over time, since the Jesus/caveman days, we are actually getting better on a societal level. This would not stop me from going out and butchering, for instance, a wooly mammoth (I want one), but I would at least share the meat with my neighbours. This I promise.

Also, I have kids and have faith that they will single-handedly redeem the human race. By inventing light sabres. True story.

  2. Wow. I subscribe to several news sites and hadn’t seen any of the headlines you posted. Crazy world we live in. I’d join you in your new race. It sounds like a much nicer place to be. However, we still would be living on the Earth with these “people.” Even if we weren’t one of them, we would still be surrounded by them.

As long as hate and ignorance is tolerated and even embraced by so many, I fear we are destined to be unhappy by much of what happens in the world around us. But, if we can be better people, nicer, kinder, rational, generous, and loving, hopefully that will rub off on the others around us too.

  3. Can’t listen to the news and lately can’t wait to just get home. Last I read, some twat licker killed a perfectly human human for complaining about a dog. That was about 3 weeks ago. I’m sorry about your friend. I would join you if you’d have me.

  4. Welcome. : ) Where have you been? You don’t need to start a new race. YOU are the new race. The hardest part is striking the balance.

  5. I say we not only start a new race, but we find a new planet to live on as well. Humans have done so much damage to this one as much as they have to each other. Might as well call it a wash and start fresh. I’m with you. The race you describe sounds so much like Jedi that I think we should call it the Jedi race. What do you think?

  6. I’m in! People suck. Individual persons can be really fabulous, but as a whole people suck. I don’t know where Trent and Rhonda live, but where I live kindness (etc. etc.) is not rubbing off very quickly. I look at the people in this small town and can see where humanity as a whole is going – straight down the crapper.

I have to disagree with Trent about humanity getting better on a societal level since caveman times – I think we’ve come up with so many more cruel things to do to each other that there is no comparison.

My ideal society would have only one rule – do unto others. Yup. The Golden Rule. That’s all we need if the consequences are an eye for an eye. Pretty simple and even the stupidest among us would be able to understand. THEN we might see some changes. As long as assholes get away with being assholes, there is no reason for them to change, no matter how much kindness (etc. etc.) everyone else puts out there.

  8. Yes, please – may I join you? This post could have been written by me (if I could write like you), since it describes exactly how I feel. I don’t watch news anymore and I have blocked FB posts from people who keep posting bad stuff. Just too much.

  10. “A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky animals, and you know it” I think agent K should have added cruel.
There is some good (which people like to ignore in favour of the disgusting), but I see no reason not to take that good and create something better with it.
    I’m in, if I’m wanted.

  12. I have experienced much sadness, hurt and pain from an individual in my life who abused me, but I’m afraid I wont be joining you where ever your new race are going. Because I see so much positive and good every day. It was marrying such a person that helped me see that. Also last year I watched as a young boy tried so hard to beat leukemia. In the ring with him fighting so very hard were at least 100 staff and medics (nurses, dieticians, infectious diseases, oncology, haematology, cooks, cleaners) who wore their hearts on their sleeves and went more than an extra mile for him. Not to mention the young 21 year old girl who donated bone marrow to a stranger in the hope he’d be saved.
Look around you. Look at those who donate blood every day to save others or those who sign up to save others. I think instead of chucking in the towel look around you and join those who really are making this world better. There are so many, it’s just you are looking in the wrong places. Don’t be passive, be active. Each life really can make a difference.

  13. I hate to be the realist, but all new utopias are doomed to end up dystopic because they are still made up of humans. You can look at almost every regime in world history that we view as vile and horrific, and they all have one thing in common… they started out as a reaction to perceived injustices from the old ways, and vowed they were going to do things right this time. But sadly, we all have these human failings to different degrees… and withdrawing from the human race isn’t going to change those.

Others have said it better than I can above… but there really is much more good to humans than bad. If this weren’t true, civilization as we know it would have never got off the ground, let alone thrived for so long. But we all have dark sides we must keep repressed in a civilized society, and it is highlighting the instances when human nature goes terribly wrong that help to satisfy those evil desires in all of us… whether we want to admit that or not. This is why bad news gets ratings, why outspoken political airheads get all the attention, and why sleazy gossip sells magazines. It’s enough to make one want to crawl under the ground and start a new life when you think about it…. yet, it actually helps to keep us grounded. So I think, anyway…

Or, if you think that’s all just a bunch of psychobabble mumbo jumbo BS, you can always become a squirrel. We are not evil….

  14. I dunno what to call this new race but I’m with you. Shit depresses me. Sometimes I see things on TV that just make me weep uncontrollably. I feel like a sap & then I realize, wait…there’s nothing wrong with me for crying. There’s something wrong with them for doing all the messed up shit that makes me feel so strongly.

  16. You’re right, and it’s sad. Even worse, I’ve seen this shit for years and I’m convinced that it’s part of our nature – we wouldn’t be evolved beings without the darker corners of collective selves. Still, I’m with you buddy.

  19. Maybe all the thoughtless soulless jacknuts who harm everyone else are the ones who aren’t human. There seems to be more of them everyday. I think it’s a virus, maybe they’re actually zombies. Either way, I’m in and if it turns out they are zombies (or prezombies – who knows maybe it’s the first stage of their evolution) I’ve watched every Walking Dead episode like 10 times and have seen almost every zombie movie so of course I have mad zombie slayer skills by osmosis … ;)

  20. Why the hell did I click on that penis link? I knew that no good could come of reading that story, but I did it anyway.

After reading that, I’m convinced that there’s no good left in humanity. Sorry to not be a shining light of positivity here, but I think I’m ready to quit being human too now.

  22. I think this is why I used an alien to narrate my sci-fi novels. So I can be an alien while I write. And spend time with other aliens. I even make the humans more humane. Because humans can suck. And they don’t taste all that good either.

  23. This is why I usually avoid the news – if possible. Unless it’s something freaking awesome like that lady yelling “I’m a pirate!” But I am tired of the hatred – and how that hatred is passed down to children so very quickly. It’s sad.

That’s the smaller issue at hand in this post, but for some reason that feels really personal to me. Like really personally atrocious. I avoid the news also, for the same reason you do. Yes, I will join you. Let’s all pitch in and buy and island and not let shitty people on it. How about Dontbeadickburg? Or Passionatelypoliteville? Too long. I’ll keep thinking. Let me know when to send for my things.

  29. Great article. I agree with you. Too much bad news and too much news spam for some subjects in continuous news channels. For exemple when Michael Shumacher had his accident medias were talking about it 5 times per hour during one week. Now we do not know if he is ok or not.(he situation is stabilised).
Medias try to make us stupid under the cover of “we inform you of what happens”.
